Eli Whitney

Eli Whitney is the man known for creating the cotton gin. He was born on December 8, 1765 in Westborro, Massachusetts. When he was young, he was very interested in machinery and inventing. Whitney studied at Yale University. Originally, Whitney had planned on becoming a lawyer, but after he completed his studies, Whitney was offered a job as a tutor. He later discovered that his pay would be cut in half and decided to work for Catherine Greene instead, a women whom he had met on his way. There, he was able to see how difficult trade was and how hard it was to produce cotton. This led him to the creation of the cotton gin. He created this machine as a way to remove seeds from cotton in a much easier and less time consuming fashion. Despite the success of his invention, Whitney did not make much money from it because farmers were creating their own versions of it. Eli Whitney died on January 8, 1825.
